With an energy crisis, an economic crisis and a climate crisis, it is time for America to stop looking to the past to solve our energy needs and instead renew our can-do spirit with a new Apollo program for America that will get us off oil, make us energy independent, invest in clean energy, and create a new generation of high-quality, green-collar jobs. Just like Kennedy put a man on the moon, we too can solve the three biggest crises facing America today by being bold and by investing in the ingenuity of the American people.
It is abundantly clear – a movement is building around launching a new Apollo mission for America that will end our dependence on oil, and fuel our economy with cleaner, greener energy that will be produced right here at home.

From the terms of use on the Microsoft doc site
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/cc300389.aspx#C

"Microsoft publishes information on a number of APIs on this Web Site. Microsoft will not assert any of its patent rights on account of your products calling these APIs in order to receive services from the Microsoft product that exposes the APIs."

So, as long as you don't intend to compete with them on the server, you're okay. There's always a catch.

    Hi Dana,
Thanks for coming by and responding. You're right MS has a head start. I'm just pointing out that it's not like the open source community is doing nothing. We are doing real things that are steps in the right direction.
Sharepoint since 2001

Open Source: 8 months ago

Integrated solution from open source? Not yet

So, it's great that MS provides something open source does not care about, until realizes MS is selling it.

By the way what happened with the liberty alliance? Pure FUD

Fortunately, there exists MS, and because of MS, there exists the reactionary people from opensource, which if course makes MS improve

Providing good technology ("value" as you like to say) is great, but that isn't specific to open source. Open source has a particular meaning, and it goes way beyond just providing source code. The right to redistribute the code, modified or unmodified, at no cost or for a fee, is fundamental; these rights have been part of the definition ever since OSI popularized the open source term.

You don't have to make your primary product open source. But if it's not, please don't call it by that name; that is just deception.

Finally, I appreciate your making this new software open source, and urge you to eventually put all your software under OSI-approved open source licenses.

    Hi Michael,

Well stated.

By the way, we shouldn't let this thread die without mentioning that the OSA's community site is based on an earlier version of Team Elements. I'd like to thank Centric for this contribution. It's worked well for us so far.
I found this comment to be oddly humorous, too. It definately smacks of head in the sand. As I talk to really smart business people - CEOs of healcare IT companies, Wall Street tech investors, consumer brand strategists - I am constantly amazed at how profoundly people misunderstand open source. And the people that often get it the least are those in/at the top of traditional, proprietary enterprise software companies. Thinking about why this is the case, maybe it's because the open source model isn't just different, it's the exact opposite of the way they do things. they say don't look at the code, don't copy it, dont change it. If you do we'll hunt you down like a dog. You want a feature? take a number. we say look at it, copy it, change it. want a feature? build it.

Hopefully OSA will help educate the market about open source.
